چکیده

Abstract Finding optimal survival strategies of living systems embedded in fluctuating environments generally involves a balance between phenotypic diversification and sensing. If we neglect sensing mechanisms, it is known that slow, resp. fast, environmental transitions favor regime heterogeneous, homogeneous, response. We focus here on the simplest non-trivial case, i.e. two randomly switching phenotypes subjected to stochastically environments. The asymptotic (long term) growth rate this model was studied elsewhere; further expand these results by discussing finite time fluctuations. An exact expression for variance, alongside with approximations valid different regimes, are tested numerically details. Our simulations dynamics suggest close connection variance extinction probability, understood as risk population. Motivated an earlier trade-off analysis average capital Kelly’s gambling model, study present model. Despite considerable differences models, find similar curves (Pareto fronts), suggesting our conclusions robust, broadly applicable various fields ranging from biology/ecology economics.

Phenotypic switching of populations of cells in a stochastic environment

In biology phenotypic switching is a common bet-hedging strategy in the face of uncertain environmental conditions. Existing mathematical models often focus on periodically changing environments to determine the optimal phenotypic response. We focus on the case in which the environment switches randomly between discrete states. Starting from an individual-based model we derive stochastic differ...

Approximating Pareto optimal compiler optimization sequences - a trade-off between WCET, ACET and code size

With the growing complexity of embedded systems software, high code quality can only be achieved using a compiler. Sophisticated compilers provide a vast spectrum of various optimizations to improve code aggressively w.r.t. different objective functions, e.g. average-case execution time (ACET) or code size. Owing to the complex interactions between the optimizations, the choice for a promising ...

On a boundedly rational Pareto-optimal trade in emission reduction

We consider the emission reduction process involving several countries, in which the countries negotiate, in steps, frequently enough, on small, local emission reductions and implement their decisions right away. In every step, the countries either find a mutually acceptable local emission reduction vector and use it as a local emission reduction plan, or terminate the emission reduction proces...

Stochastic Congestion Alleviation with a Trade-off between Demand Response Resources and Load Shedding

Under the smart grid environments, Demand Response Resources (DRRs) as power system resources can effectively participate in and improve performance of electric systems. Congestion management is one of the technical challenges in which DRRs can play a significant role. Previously, congestion management is applied without considering the power system uncertainties. Therefore, a stochastic conges...
